Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow

So, I’m a little behind on my blogging this week. So much going on, so little time…if only i had 25 hours in the day right?
I leave for the Philippines tomorrow and will be gone for a few days, but i’m hoping to blog while i’m away so that ya’ll can see what i’m doing or where i’ve been. I have a dilemma…I don’t know what I’m gonna do about my running while overseas. I realize that the hotel will have a treadmill, but I’m not good at treadmill running…so you see, it’s a dilemma for me!!! Hmmm, a week of not keeping up on my training is a bit frightening, but God’s taking care of me, so i shouldn’t fret eh?

I have a couple of heroes to write about…Both are friends of mine, both amazing women that have recently taken on some new adventures.

One friend took up running a couple of months ago…mind you, 6 months ago she told me that she would never be able to run more than a minute without keeling over dead…I’m happy to say that she started pursuing this little activity and this week she totally ran like a champ! With arms raised in victory at the end… in that very Rocky-esque style. I mean, seriously!!! She’s got to the point where she can run continuously for several minutes and still feel good about it!!!That’s amazing Chica!!!

This other friend of mine…she decided that she wants to lose a few pounds, so she’s totally keeping a food diary, walking extra, drinking more water AND peeling off the skin of chicken parts before eating it! I don’t know if any of you have tried keeping food diaries…it’s not easy!

I love my amazing friends…seriously, it’s the little things that make the biggest differences. Heroes because they choose to be healthy and live longer so that i can bug them every single day!!!

things i do that validate my stupidness

some of it is absolutely not ok to mention in a public forum…
2 of you know about last night’s stupidness, the rest of you need not know.
SW…you are not allowed to publish a book about the stupid things i’ve said to you in the recent past. :)

Today i’ve started off just plain grumpy, so i decided that i need to come into work and stay in my little caged cube and acknowledge the presence of no man or woman. I attempted to do that except people around me are kind and sweet and actually engage me in conversation… Bah Humbug

After getting some coffee in addition to balanced portions of carbs and protein I came to my desk to put in my very special translucent purple Westone ear ornaments and tune out the world, except the sound wasn’t working on my speaker…ready for my stupidness? Right, well, attempt i did to make it work, it did not, but I’m pretty sure I turned it on then off then to the maximum volume level…but wait, did i check the mute button? Hmmm…here’s me now pressing the function button while holding down the button with the picture of the speaker on it, at which point my hair, which i have not bothered to fix all week and is already crazy curly, stands straight on end and i feel like i have experienced a sonic boom within my brain. Yes, my friends…this is the intelligence I attempt to live with on a regular basis. Fear not, I have no visions of taking over the world because i assure you my stupidness stands in the way of any ideas of grandeur.

ugh

i ran 45 minutes beautifully tonight. no real complaints. now after having eaten, showered and getting ready for bed i want to throw up. what gives?

nope

didn’t do it…didn’t run last night. i had a good excuse. today i’ll be running to make up for the past two days where i’ve slacked off.

What’s the message in your bottle?

Aquafina has come clean and said that it’s water comes from the tap…is that a surprise really? Who’re they kidding, Dasani water comes from the same place. Is that a surprise? Not so much, but I guess we lose part of the mystique of drinking something out of a pretty bottle with pretty packaging.
Working for a non-profit makes me think, and think again about stuff that I consume, so the issue of bottled water has always been interesting to me…so much so that i wrote some papers about it in college(before i worked here). :) Yes, I’m a nerd.
So, the latest issue of Fast Company Magazine has an awesome article discussing our obsession with bottled water…I wanted to highlight some of it because it really helps explore our obsession with the messages we send with the bottles in our hands. I’m the first to admit that I love the Fiji water bottle packaging, but packaging comes at a price, and that’s something I’m willing to admit I didn’t realize till I read this article.

For one thing we spend ridiculous amounts on water…”Last year, we spent more on Poland Spring, Fiji Water, Evian, Aquafina, and Dasani than we spent on iPods or movie tickets–$15 billion. It will be $16 billion this year.”

one out of six people in the world has no dependable, safe drinking water. The global economy has contrived to deny the most fundamental element of life to 1 billion people, while delivering to us an array of water “varieties” from around the globe, not one of which we actually need.

“…in Fiji, a state-of-the-art factory spins out more than a million bottles a day of the hippest bottled water on the U.S. market today, while more than half the people in Fiji do not have safe, reliable drinking water. Which means it is easier for the typical American in Beverly Hills or Baltimore to get a drink of safe, pure, refreshing Fiji water than it is for most people in Fiji.”

Sad isn’t it? Before news broke out this week, the magazine talked about how much we pay for this “healthy” want …”Put another way, if the water we use at home cost what even cheap bottled water costs, our monthly water bills would run $9,000.” More than sad, seems almost like a sin to me.

Yep, the news is out, Aquafina is just bottled tap water, so is Dasani…they just haven’t said it yet…“Aquafina, with 13% of the market. Coke’s (NYSE:KO) Dasani is number two, with 11% of the market. Both are simply purified municipal water–so 24% of the bottled water we buy is tap water repackaged by Coke and Pepsi for our convenience…”

I sure am thankful for the delicious Colorado water that comes out of my tap, but I wonder…is this enough to make us think before we take our next cool refreshing sip of pretty packaged water?
